Astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly

Now that NASA has had to push the planned launch date for space shuttle Endeavour on STS-134 to no earlier than November, an interesting phenomenon could take place.

The commander of STS-134 is Mark Kelly, pictured left. Mark Kelly’s identical twin brother, Scott Kelly pictured right, is scheduled to arrive at the space station in October 2010 to serve as ISS Expedition 25 flight engineer and commander of Expedition 26.

Now the two may meet in space. The meeting could also mean the first noogie in space. Stay tuned.

The Kelly brothers joined NASA’s astronauts corps in August 1996. Mark Kelly first shuttle mission was also on Endeavour as pilot on STS-108 in 2001, and has also flown on Discovery twice — as pilot on the second Return to Flight mission after Columbia’s loss, STS-121 in 2006, and then as commander on STS-124 in 2008.

Scott J. Kelly has flown on two shuttle missions, first in 1999 as pilot aboard Discovery on STS-103 to the Hubble Space Telescope and then as commander aboard Endeavour on STS-118 to the space station.

They were born Feb. 21, 1964 in Orange, New Jersey. Their parents now live in Flagler Beach, Fla. about an hour north of Kennedy Space Center.
