Major Space Related Activities for the Week

  • Wednesday is Yuri’s Night, a global celebration of the first human spaceflight. It was 62 years ago that the former Soviet Union launched cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on a one orbit trek around the Earth.
  • NASA’s Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group is meeting in person and virtually on Tuesday and Wednesday at the University of Arizona to discuss future Red Planet exploration.
  • The launch of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Juice mission from French Guiana on an eight-year journey to explore Jupiter’s icy moons, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa, is slated for Thursday at 8:15 a.m. EDT. An ESA webcast begins at 7:45 a.m. EDT and a post-launch news conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. EDT.
  • The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s committee on NASA Mission Critical Workforce, Infrastructure and Technology will meet Thursday and Friday at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) with plans to livestream open sessions.
  • The U.S. House and Senate remain on break for another week, except for pro forma sessions.
  • Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl over when SpaceX’s orbital Starship test flight will attempt liftoff. The FAA must give authorization. Starship is in line to provide NASA’s Artemis III astronauts with transportation between lunar orbit and the surface of the Moon.
