The Humans to Mars Summit will be held in Washington D.C. this Tuesday through Thursday, May 17-19. It will include an exciting array of speakers and topics, include Deputy Administrator of NASA Dava Newman, Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and the author of The Martian, Andy Weir.

Our very own Executive Director, Dr. Mary Lynne Dittmar, will be moderating a Policy panel entitled Aligning the Journey to Mars with Other National Needs.

The webcast will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18, at 8:30 am ET.

Tomorrow’s topics include “How and Why Mars,” “Hollywood and Mars,” “Virtual Reality and Space Exploration,” “In What Decade Will We Land on Mars,” and “Envisioning Mars: an Interactive Conversation.”

Abigail ‘Astronaut Abby’ Harrison, the young founder of The Mars Generation, will also speak on Tuesday.

Wednesday will begin with a session hosted by the Senior Scientist for Advanced Concepts at NASA GSFC, Harley Thronson. Following this will be a moderated discussion with Andy Weir. Afterwards, several of the Coalition’s founding members will be on a panel discussion about Enabling Travel to Mars. Other topics on Wednesday include Human Exploration and Mars Science.

There will be parallel breakout sessions on Wednesday afternoon, with the first session “Making it Happen” to include the Asteroid Redirect Mission, Solar Electric Propulsion, Entry – Descent – Landing, Environmental Control and Life Support Systems, and Mars Surface Space Suits.

The other breakout session is called Steps to Human Exploration of Mars. Its topics include the International Space Station, Space Launch System/Orion, Long-Duration Cislunar Habitation, and Telerobotics from Mars Orbit.

On the final day of the summit, speakers will discuss Innovation and Economics of Mars, Living on Mars: We’re Going to Stay, Journey to Mars, and Where Do We Go From Here? A Facilitated Discussion.
