NASA’s Space Launch System is built on a legacy of American rocket prowess, notably the previous record holder for the most powerful rocket ever built – Saturn.

The Saturn I rocket was the United States’ first dedicated heavy-lift space launcher, and was noted by President Kennedy as the vehicle that finally put the U.S. launch capability ahead of the Soviet space program, after the launch of Sputnik.
