NASA’s Space Launch System will have unprecedented power, range and flexibility among rockets. This will be achieved in part because of the rocket’s many planned variants, which will allow a huge range of missions and destinations to the outer reaches of our solar system and beyond.

Take a look at the planned SLS variants below:

Block I

Orange_tank_SLS_-_Post-CDR

Designed for a circumlunar trajectory, Block I will be the first man-rated spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit since the Apollo missions.

Block IB

SLS-Advanced-Booster

Designed to send astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid, Block IB will allow close-up study and manipulation of an asteroid.

Block II/IIB

sls-block-2

Designed to send astronauts or cargo to Mars, Block II and IIB will enable human explorers to reach Mars.
