On this day in 1958, NASA first became operational.
Intended to replace the US National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA was founded as a direct result of Sputnik 1’s launch in 1957. NASA quickly became the world’s premier organization for space exploration and directly competed with the Soviet space program for world firsts.
