  • No borders in the final frontier
    In an op-ed, aerospace entrepreneur Sam Hutchison calls for an expanded participation in the exploration of space, an enterprise so far led by the U.S., Russia and China and focused primarily on national security interests that drive industrial growth. “By democratizing access to space, we could accelerate scientific progress and move closer to unlocking the solar system’s vast resources for the benefit of all humanity,” he suggests.

Major Space Related Activities for the Week

  • Hurricane Milton has delayed NASA Crew-8’s return from the ISS to no earlier than Thursday at 3:05 a.m. EDT, with an ocean splashdown planned off the Florida coast.
  • SpaceX received FAA clearance for Monday’s Falcon 9 launch of ESA’s Hera mission to the Didymos/Dimorphos asteroid pair from Cape Canaveral. Falcon 9 launches had been suspended following an off-nominal burn during the September 28 NASA Crew-9 mission.
  • NASA’s Europa Clipper mission to Jupiter’s moon has also been postponed, awaiting FAA approval.
  • Meanwhile, Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-27 launch remains on track for Monday at 12:10 p.m. EDT from West Texas.
  • This week, major space organizations like the American Astronomical Society and NASA’s Science Committee are holding meetings.
  • On Thursday, Kathy Sullivan will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Women in Aerospace annual awards dinner..
