- NASA’s asteroid mission to Apophis: Key for Earth’s defense
In an op-ed, former NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine and Bill Nye note the asteroid Apophis will streak close by Earth on April 13, 2029. As long as a football stadium and traveling at 69,000 miles per hour, disaster would follow if it struck Earth. Calculations say it will not, but the swing by Earth offers an opportunity for a close assessment by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which took on a new mission after dropping samples of the asteroid Bennu off to Earth in September 2023. Bridenstine and Nye urge sufficient funding for the study of Apophis by OSIRIS-REx, which has been renamed OSIRIS-APEX.
