Orion will launch on the Space Launch System (SLS), NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, to reach its Deep Space destinations such as an asteroid and Mars. Exploration Mission-1, currently scheduled for 2017, will be the first mission to test the fully integrated Orion and SLS spacecraft.
Can you launch a rocket into orbit? You can test your skills by making a simple rocket using the SLS pattern, tape and a straw. Then, learn how much air is needed to launch your rocket to different altitudes. Make sure to find an open space for launch testing to ensure the safety of those around you.

- SLS pattern
- Straws
- Transparent tape
- Scissors
- Location to launch rockets
Directions
1. Cut out the SLS pattern along the solid lines.
2. Fold the paper along the center line.
3. Tape open the side and top. Do not tape the bottom!
4. Fold the paper at Fold 1 or 2 depending on the length of your straw.
5. Insert the straw into the open end of the rocket.
6. Aim high and blow into the straw to launch your rocket.
