PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Political, institutional or industrial uncertainties are a real handicap for space agencies as well as for industry.

That’s a take home message from a plenary meeting dedicated to the impact of governments’ space policy changes on industry – staged here at the 61st International Astronautical Congress (IAC).

Nearly 3,000 experts from around the globe have gathered to share lessons learned and future plans for 21st century space activity.

At the annual IAC, an Industry Relations Committee set up the plenary.

This item was debated by the representatives of major agencies and industrial partners from the space-faring nations of Europe, Asia and the United States in order to address the issue.

The main outcomes, presented by the Chairman of the Industry Relations Committee, Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman & CEO of Arianespace, are the following:

— The main programs initiated by governments and space agencies stimulate industrial space activity.

— Industry has a strong capacity to adapt itself to national space policies.

— Political, institutional or industrial uncertainties are a real handicap for space agencies as well as for industry.

According to a press statement outlining the findings of the Committee:

“Therefore, an evolution of space policies and industrial organizations is better than a revolution to ensure the long-term stability of the sector and its competitiveness.”
