Wednesday’s CSExtra offers the latest reporting and commentary on space related activities from across the globe. China initiates a limited independent satellite navigation system.  As an issue, Space seems to be getting little attention on the campaign trail. Russia’s ill fated Mars mission probe could fall to Earth in mid-January. Scientists find evidence of planet formation around the Milky Way’s central black hole. Japan provides future space station astronaut Akihiko Hoshide with a wardrobe of distinctive T-shirts.

1. From Discovery.com: China initiates limited navigation services with its independent Compass, or Beidou, satellite system. Worldwide service should be available after the launching of six more satellites, according to Chinese leadership.      http://bit.ly/rTAnEo

A. From Xinhuanet.com of China:  China’s Beidou joins the U. S. Global Positioning Satellite System as well as Russia’s Glonass and Europe’s Galileo space based navigation systems. Initially, Beidou will serve the Asia Pacific region with its 10 satellites. Global coverage should be available by 2020.     http://bit.ly/uUoJEz

2. From the Orlando Sentinel: Which presidential candidate has spoken of NASA and space exploration during the campaign? It’s Newt Gingrich, and he was quickly taken to task by an opponent over brief comments on lunar exploration. So far, the nation’s space plans are not generating much campaign discussion, the Sentinel reports.      http://thesent.nl/rOrByZ

3. From Space.com: European forecasts place the expected re-entry of Russia’s ill-fated Mars probe, Phobos Grunt, in mid-January. As many as two dozen pieces of the 14 ton spacecraft may reach the Earth’s surface, say experts. The spacecraft has been locked in Earth orbit since its launching in early November.      http://bit.ly/v2fYzB
