Wednesday’s CSExtra offers a roundup of the latest reporting on space-related activities from around the globe. In New York City, children flock to meet the crew of NASA’s final shuttle mission at the American Museum of Natural History. Could wealthy space tourists circle the moon in 2016-17? An active Earth is neither shrinking nor growing in size, say scientists. Modern astronomers are facing an information bonanza. Scientists unravel the mystery of an unusual cloud formation on Saturn’s moon Titan. Southern senators urge NASA to accelerate work on a new heavy lift rocket.

1. From the New York Daily News: The astronauts who flew aboard NASA’s final shuttle flight visit the American Museum of Natural History. More than 200 kids flock to the museum to meet the fliers. Atlantis touched down on July 21, successfully concluding the three decade long shuttle program. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/08/16/2011-08-16_nasas_final_shuttle_mission_crew_touches_down_at_american_museum_of_natural_hist.html

2. From the Kyiv Post of the Ukraine:  U. S.-based Space Adventures is close to naming tourists for a flight around the moon using Russian Soyuz spacecraft, the publication reports. A lunar flyby is possible in the 2016-17 time frame at a cost of $150 million, according to the report. http://www.kyivpost.com/news/guide/guidenews/detail/110991/

3. From Universetoday.com: Is the very active Earth growing or shrinking?  New measurements from orbiting spacecraft have some scientists convinced the planet is standing pat.  They are counting on The International Terrestrial Reference Frame to reveal changes. http://www.universetoday.com/88236/geodesy-is-alive-and-well-and-splitting-hairs-on-planet-earth/#more-88236

4. From Discovery.com: The pace of discovery in astronomy is gathering speed thanks to new data bases that allow vast amounts of information to be shared widely. Add that to the growing size of telescopes and detectors with increased sensitivity.  There seems to be plenty for astronomers to explain in the decades ahead. http://news.discovery.com/space/online-virtual-universe-will-be-full-of-discoveries-110816.html

5. From Space.com: Scientists solve the mystery of an arrow shaped cloud spotted in the skies over Saturn’s large moon Titan by the NASA-led Cassini mission. http://www.exploredeepspace.com/12640-saturn-moon-titan-weird-cloud-explained.html

6. From the Huntsville Times: U. S. Senators from Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana urge NASA Administrator Charles Bolden to expedite development of the Space Launch System, a new heavy lift rocket to start astronauts on future journeys to distant destinations. http://blog.al.com/space-news/2011/08/nasa_state_senators_again_urge.html
