Wednesday’s CSExtra offers the latest reporting and commentary on space related developments from across the globe. On Tuesday, NASA formally established April 29th for the launching of shuttle Endeavour’s final mission. Base lined at 14 days, the mission to equip the station with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a $2 billion particle accelerator, and carry out four spacewalks could grow to 16 days.  An editorial urges NASA to hasten the arrival of commercial space transportation services. A look back at the role canines played in the successes of the early Soviet space program.

From Spaceflightnow.com: NASA affirms April 29 as the launch date for shuttle Endeavour’s 25th and final mission, Over 14 to 16 days in orbit, Endeavour’s six man crew plans to equip the International Space Station with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a $2 billion particle accelerator developed to study antimatter and dark matter and drop off spare parts for the power, thermal control and communications systems.

A. From The Orlando Sentinel: Some have noted Endeavour’s launch was scheduled for the same day as the Royal wedding. However, NASA did not consider the ceremony in Great Britain a reason to chose a different launch date.

B. From the Associated Press via USA Today: NASA is prepared to host Endeavour commander Mark Kelly’s wife, Gabrielle Giffords. The Arizona congresswoman was seriously wounded by gunfire during an early January political rally in Tucson. Giffords has been recovering in at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, where doctors will determine whether she is healthy enough to travel to the Florida lift off of Endeavour.

C. From the Huntsville Times of Alabama: A half million people, eager to pay their respects to NASA shuttle program, may gather in Central Florida for Endeavour’s launching.

3. From Florida Today: In an editorial, the newspaper urges more urgency within NASA for the selection of the private companies that could begin the commercial transportation of U. S. astronauts to and from the International Space Station. On Monday, the agency awarded $270 million to four companies, Boeing, Blue Origin, Sierra Nevada and SpaceX to hasten the developments.

4. From the St. Petersburg Times of Russia: Last week, many around the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic first human space flight.  Dogs played an important role in the early Soviet successes. Some gave their lives, according to this look back at the canine contribution.
