Tuesday’s CSExtra includes the latest reports of NASA’s apparent success in the recovery of the malfunctioning cooling system aboard the International Space Station. Also more federal financial help appears to be on the way Central Florida to help with the loss of jobs as NASA’s shuttle program retires next year. Proof of alien existence could be coming within 25 years, one veteran in the field tells a SETI convention.

1. From Spaceflightnow.com:  Spacewalking U.S. astronauts succeed Monday in recovering the vital cooling system aboard the International Space Station. Half of the cooling system malfunctioned on July 31, limiting the amount of electrical power for life support functions and science experiments.

2. From the AP via the Los Angeles Times:  U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, proposes the establishment of five enterprise zones around the nation with tax breaks for commercial space businesses. One would be in Central Florida. The region, home to the Kennedy Space Center, is facing a tough economy and job layoffs as NASA’s shuttle program winds to an end next year.

3. From Florida Today:  A Presidential task force will recommend Tuesday that the Commerce Department make $35 million in competitive grants available to help offset the economic problems created by the shuttle program’s retirement. Those eligible businesses types include aviation, aerospace, clean energy, homeland security, and life sciences. A. From the Orlando Sentinel:  White House advisers propose $5 million to support the fledgling commercial space industry in Florida with a new FAA facility. The money is part of $40 million in assistance that President Obama pledged to the state in April. The pledge was made to help the state weather the retirement of NASA’s space shuttle program.
