Monday’s CSExtra offers new editorial comment on the NASA Authorization Bill passed by the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee last week. Most of the comment supports the way Congress is pointing NASA and sees  the measure as breaking a stalemate with the White House. Senate appropriators may act this week as well. Also, the New York Times looks at how the surviving commercial space transportation initiative might change traditional aerospace corporations.

2. From The New York Times:  A look at how President Obama’s commercial space initiative will affect the traditional aerospace industry. Big changes for Boeing and Lockheed Martin. However, their joint venture, United Launch Alliance, may do quite well.

3. From Florida Today: New Falcon 9 hardware from SpaceX arrives at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The company is looking to September for its first launch under NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program. SpaceX scored a success with its inaugural demonstration launch on June 4.

4. From the AP via the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and Orlando Sentinel: Along the U.S. Gulf Coast, local television weather forecasters track and predict the movements of the BP oil leak and land fall of tar balls. They rely on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as well as NASA for tracking information and satellite views.

5. From Spaceflightnow.com: NASA’s immobile Martian rover, Spirit, could awaken from a wintry electronic slumber in September or October. The rover’s nap began in late March as sun angles grew too low to charge the solar arrays. Spirit and its twin, Opportunity, reached Mars in January 2004.

6. From the Dallas Morning News: Attendance, about 500, is down at this year’s Moon Day event at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas.  Hosted in part by the National Space Society, the weekend event commemorates the first Apollo moon landing with displays and lectures. There is a public perception that the nation has lost interest in exploration, according to the report.
