Coalition for Deep Space Exploration Comments on FY 2024 NASA Budget Request

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Coalition for Deep Space Exploration (CDSE) is pleased to see President Biden’s Administration continue to support a sustained deep space exploration program. The Fiscal Year 2024 Presidential budget request of $27.2 billion for NASA is a solid step toward maintaining American leadership in space.

“We look forward to working with Congress to ensure continuity of needed funding for Artemis and other programs, which is indispensable to returning and sustaining a human presence in cislunar space and on the Moon, exploring Mars and beyond, and maintaining our leadership in space,” said acting President and CEO Andrew Allen.

The Artemis II crewed mission to lunar orbit will build upon the uncrewed Artemis I flight test by demonstrating a broad range of SLS and Orion capabilities needed on deep space missions. The request includes $7.971 billion for NASA’s Artemis program, including the Space Launch System, the Orion spacecraft, Exploration Ground Systems, as well as the development and testing of the transportation and surface technologies that are essential to allow humans to build a sustainable presence on the lunar surface, with the goal of eventually sending humans to Mars.

“Last year’s Artemis I mission was a great success, and we need to maintain that momentum as we move forward to a crewed Artemis II mission in 2024, a lunar landing with Artemis III, and additional Artemis missions beyond 2025,” Allen said. “It’s crucial that Congress continues adequate funding for these and other programs to respond to contingencies, support innovation and highly skilled, highly paid jobs, secure supply chains across the country, and draw students into STEM education, all of which help maintain U.S. leadership in space.”

The budget also continues investments to extend the International Space Station to 2030 and develop commercial low Earth orbiting space stations, while devoting over $8 billion to Science programs, thereby demonstrating America’s commitment to improving our understanding of the Earth, the solar system and the universe. Additionally, the $158 million for STEM education guarantees NASA’s leading role in inspiring and educating the next generation of scientists and engineers.
