This is another big week for NASA and its space centers in the fierce political battle being fought over the future of human spaceflight.
Below I’ve tried to provide an overview, and take a peek at what may happen in the coming days and months.
An ongoing debate
With his ability to appoint its administrator and propose the space agency’s budget, President Obama has substantial power in setting NASA’s course. But because Congress writes the checks and has already approved the Constellation program twice, they are going to have their say on NASA’s future.
During a teleconference with reporters last Thursday NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, at least half a dozen times, added the caveat ” … if Congress approves the budget.” That’s a big “if” and it’s not something Congress appears inclined to do at this time.
