COCOA — Speaker after speaker proclaimed U.S. dominance in space and reiterated the importance of making sure it continues.

Estimates of attendance ranged as high as more than 4,000 for the “Save Space” community rally this afternoon at Cocoa Expo.

They waved signs, clapped and cheered.

Here’s some of what speakers said:

— Brevard County commissioner Robin Fisher kicked off the political speakers.

“We need human spaceflight,” he said. “We’ve got to be first. Russia’s got to play second.”

— U.S. Sen. George LeMieux said: “For 50 years, we have led the world and inspired dreams. We cannot let this end.”
