Coalition for Deep Space Exploration Applauds Inclusion of NASA Authorization Act in
CHIPS and Science Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, President Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act into
law. In response, Frank Slazer, president and CEO of The Coalition for Deep Space Exploration, issued the following statement:

“We are thrilled that this bipartisan legislation includes the 2022 NASA Authorization Act. The
new law shows that Congress and the White House recognize the importance of space to our
nation’s competitiveness and resoundingly back NASA’s goals for space exploration. That level
of support will pave the way for Americans – and our international partners – to venture to Mars.

“The Act specifically authorizes and defines the key components of NASA’s Artemis program,
which will return astronauts to the moon. It also tasks NASA with developing a clear strategic
vision for exploring the Moon and Mars. That vision will be shared with international partners,
nongovernmental entities, Congress, and the American people.

“The Act also firmly supports extending the U.S. commitment to International Space Station
operations from 2024 to 2030.

“Domestically, the bill requires reports on the health of industrial bases for civil space missions
and operations. In addition, NASA must carry out a flight rate of two integrated Space Launch
System and Orion crew vehicle missions annually until the lunar activities needed to enable a
human mission to Mars are achieved.

“Finally, the CHIPS and Science Act will help strengthen our country’s future pipeline of
engineers, scientists, and researchers. It authorizes a robust NASA Science program in the space
and planetary science, astrophysics, and Earth science disciplines. These measures, along with
the bill’s support of NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, will guarantee our nation’s long-term
technological leadership and economic competitiveness. They’ll also protect U.S. national
security and offer profound inspiration to future generations.”
