The captain of Crystal Cruises‘ Crystal Symphony won’t be the only captain on board when the ship sets sail for the Mexican Riviera on Nov. 28.

The luxury line says Captain Robert “Hoot” Gibson, a longtime NASA astronaut with a storied career that includes five trips into space, will be accompanying cruisers on the voyage.

Gibson was part of a number of important Space Shuttle missions in the 1980s and 1990s, including a first-ever docking with the Russian Space Station Mir in 1995. Gibson also served as Chief of the Astronaut Office during the 1990s.

Crystal says Gibson will be a featured speaker during the Nov. 28 cruise — the latest of the line’s “Experiences of Discovery” series of sailings. The theme of the seven-night voyage is “breakthroughs in science and technology, from space travel to the latest in medical technology,” the line says.

In addition to Gibson, speakers include Gibson’s wife, Rhea Seddon — also a NASA astronaut who was one of the first six women to enter the U.S. space program. Seddon flew into space on the first Space Shuttle flight dedicated entirely to life sciences and oversaw science activities on Spacelab Life Sciences 2.
