On this day in 1995, STS-74 launched from the Florida coast.
STS-74 was the 73rd space shuttle flight, and the second shuttle to dock with the Russian space station Mir. With a crew of five, STS-74 was notable in that it was the first joint U.S.-Russian mission to supply and upgrade Mir, as the shuttle brought needed supplies and materials for the Russian crew.
This mission was also Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield’s first spaceflight–Hadfield would later become one of the most celebrated astronauts of all time.
