CNN (8/12): Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, explains why this is no time for humanity to walk away from exploration during a recent appearance on CNN’s Global Public Square. “All of these efforts are trying to get us back into space, with the goal of possibly sending humans to the Mars system, Mars and the moons and the like,” explains Tyson, when asked about NASA’s Orion/Space Launch System spacecraft plans. “And if you have that capacity, then you’ll have the capacity to go many other places. You could visit comets. You could go to the Moon easily once you’ve configured that.”
No geysers allowed: NASA engineers begin testing for SLS liquid oxygen feed system
Technology.org (8/12): Engineers this month test the liquid oxygen feed system for the Space Launch System heavy lift rocket at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. “Geysering” is a response to bubbles in the oxidizer supply.

Discovery.com (8/12): Imagery from NASA’s Cassini mission reveals clouds blowing across Saturn’s moon Titan, erasing doubts that Titan and the Earth may have similar roots.

European cargo ship brings supplies to space station
CBS News (8/12): The European Space Agency’s fifth and final Automated Transfer Vehicle, a supply capsule, docked successfully with the International Space Station early Tuesday. The capsule, which delivered over 14,000 pounds of supplies to the six person crew, will remained docked until late January.
Universe Today (8/12): Launched July 2, NASA’s OCO-2 has reached its observing orbiting. Mission will study changes in the Earth’s atmosphere from global carbon emissions.
Space Center Houston hoisting shuttle replica onto top of shuttle carrier
Houston Chronicle (8/12): On Thursday, a large crane at Space Center Houston will hoist the space shuttle mock up Independence atop NASA 905, the Boeing 747 carrier aircraft that ferried the shuttle fleet across the U.S. Space Center Houston is the Johnson Space Center’s visitor and education facility. The new Independence/Shuttle Carrier Aircraft display is part of a shuttle tribute.

Space News (8/12): ULA’s Michael Gass departs United Launch Alliance and will retire by year’s end. Gass was replaced by Tory Bruno, the current president of Lockheed Martin Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, Space News reports.
