NASA studying habitation module for asteroid mission

Space News (10/8): NASA is assessing a habitation module for astronauts as part of future human deep space exploration planning. It could join the Space Launch System heavy lift rocket and Orion crew exploration vehicle as a major element of the proposed Asteroid Redirect Mission. Details of the mission extending project were briefed at the 2014 International Astronautical Conference in Toronto last week.

NASA’s new spacecraft to endure extreme orbital test

Space.com (10/8): The trial will come during Exploration Flight Test-1, a planned two orbit unpiloted test flight of NASA’s Orion crew exploration vehicle scheduled for a Dec. 4 lift off from Cape Canaveral Air force Station, Fla. Orion is under development by NASA to start humans on future missions of deep space exploration.

NASA invites public to send their names into space aboard Orion

Defense Media Network (10/8): NASA invites public to submit their names for the Exploration Flight Test-1 mission. Names will be inscribed on a computer chip to fly aboard the Orion capsule during the planned Dec. 4 two orbit test flight. The chip will fly again on a future mission to Mars, according to the space agency. Halloween is the deadline for submissions.

Europa clipper opts for solar power over nuclear

Space News (10/8): Solar power is adequate to support a future NASA mission to study the Jovian moon Europa, according to NASA mission planners. The presentation in support of the concept was offered by the Applied Physics Lab at the 2014 International Astronomical Conference in Toronto last week. Europa may harbor conditions suitable for life, according to scientists.

Construction of giant telescope in Hawaii begins amid protests

Space.com (10/8): Construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii drew protesters this week.  Protesters expressed concerns for the project’s environmental and cultural impacts. Once complete, the $1.4 billion observatory will be used for studies of planets orbiting nearby stars.

Boeing spacecraft to move into KSC’s shuttle hangars

Spaceflightnow.com (10/8): Boeing will inherit a pair of former NASA space shuttle hangars at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The enclosures will support two U.S. Air Force, Boeing developed X-37B reusable space planes.

Collectspace.com (10/8): Space Center Houston, official visitors’ center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, had formalized ties to the Smithsonian Institution.

NASA drones in national airspace to spot wildfires

Associated Press via Houston Chronicle (10/8): Drones will be integrated into the U.S. air space, a first, to look for wildfires along the Virginia and North Carolina border.

SpaceShipTwo completes another test flight

Albuquerque Journal, of New Mexico (10/7): SpaceShipTwo carried out a piloted glide test flight from the Mojave Air and Space Port north of Los Angeles on Tuesday. Soon, Virgin Galactic intends to launch suborbital passenger flights aboard SpaceShipTwo from New Mexico.
