On this day in 1968, Apollo 7 returned to Earth to splashdown in the Pacific.

Apollo 7 was a landmark mission for the program, and served to prove the spacecraft technology for future missions. As the first manned flight after the Apollo 1 tragedy, Apollo 7 also served to restore faith in the program.

Despite problems with head colds and short tempers, the mission was a complete success, and enabled successive launches of Apollos 10-17.
