Have you ever heard of NASA’s Orbital Workshop concept?

First proposed in 1965, the Orbital Workshop was conceived as a manned orbital telescope and space station, crewed by one or more astronauts and continually and serviced by Saturn and Apollo vehicles. Perhaps most remarkably, the station would have been built inside of a spent Saturn-IVB rocket stage.

The plan for the Orbital Workshop eventually morphed into the Skylab concept, which became a huge success for NASA. The Orbital Workshop concept demonstrated the out-of-the-box thinking that was typical of that era, and could still be a viable concept today!
