At 8:30 p.m. today (your local time), many people, organizations and landmarks around the world will observe Earth Hour by turning off their lights for an hour to raise awareness regarding climate change and our planet’s sustainability.

From the Empire State Building in New York, to the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to your front porch, hundreds of millions of people are standing together in a collective display of commitment to protect our planet. Will you be among them?

If lights were turned off for an hour every day — and the resulting money saved used to build hydroelectric dams — we would have enough renewable energy to meet our global electricity demands in as little as 250 days.

Just how much potential impact does turning power off for 60 minutes have on energy use?

As example, with this much power you could launch over one-half million Saturn V rockets into space. You could drive an average car to Pluto and back twice and turn on 172 billion 100 Watt light bulbs for an hour.
